The only three pair of pants you'll ever need

March 01, 2021

Ok, I lied, technically you’ll need at least another pair for sports, which we will cover on another post but still, if you’re like most guys out there you probably already love jeans and wear them often, so you might not be surprised when you hear my minimalist holy trinity comprised entirely of jeans.

Ok… ready? Here it is.

This is it. A pair of black jeans, a pair of grey jeans and a pair of Indigo / Dark Blue jeans, that’s it, it’s that simple.

Choose 2 or 3 of the above and unless you work in a super conservative workplace that requires a suit, which is honestly more and more of a rarity these days, and you’re done (we’ll cover activewear on a different post). These jeans should cover everything from having a beer with the boys to a date night at a fancy restaurant.

What makes a pair of jeans more versatile than another?

Here are a few tips:

  • Neutral, versatile colors - Black, gray and dark blue are all incredibly colors easy to incorporate into pretty much any outfit, especially if you followed the advice in my previous post.
  • No rips or tears or excessive fading - These all push the jeans too much to the casual end of the spectrum, reducing the versatility greatly.
  • Excessively skinny fit - For the same reason as above.

Jeans shopping tips

Now that you know what to avoid, here are some tips to shop for your perfect pair:

  • Don’t be cheap - Remember these are jeans you’ll likely wear multiple times a week at least for a year, invest into something nice
  • Get something comfortable - Comfort is important, you’re going to wear these often, even if it looks great, if it feels uncomfortable or too restraining, mercilessly skip it. This goes hand in hand with the above point since in my experience more expensive jeans tend to be more comfortable.
  • Ignore the length of the pants - While you should mind the fit at the hips and butt and around the legs, the length of the pants is very easily tailored, in fact, if you’re following all the tips, there store your buying from even does it for free.
  • (If you’re new to this) Ask for Advice - While keeping in mind the comfort point, if you’re new to this bring or ask a friend (hopefully one that is known for knowing how to dress) to give his/her honest advice on how it looks. It was how I started too.

Final thoughts

Jeans are one of the best pieces of clothing ever infected, incredibly resilient, durable, and versatile. The colors above in a clean style are trialed and tested to morph into whatever style you want them to morph into. Want to look sharp for a meeting? Throw a pair of clean white sneakers or leather shoes, a button-down shirt and a blazer and you’re looking sharp. Want to look chill? Easy, put on your favorite T-shirt, some accessories like a necklace and/or bracelet, and a cool pair of sneakers (your white pair works perfectly here too, see why I love it 😉) and you’re ready for the party!
